Judy Adams’s “Jazz Notes” blog’s playlist for June 2015:

A Definitive Guide to New Releases in Jazz *

Alphabetical order: Artist(s) / Title / Label

Aguanko / Invisible /  Aguanko Music

A Detroit based band led by Mexican-born conga player, Alberto Nacif who wrote all of the music on this new album of well-executed Latin Jazz. The dynamic band includes the late trumpet master Marcus Belgrave, plus other Detroiters such as Bob Hurst, Rick Roe, Anthony Stanco, Russ Miller, Jose Espinosa and others.

The Bad Plus  / Joshua Redman / Nonesuch

Saxophonist Joshua Redman shines on this new album and sounds like he’s been with The Bad Plus all along. He adds a fresh lyrical element that’s perfectly compatible with their distinctive contemporary style.

Terence Blanchard’s E Collective / Breathless / Blue Note

This album, produced by Don Was, will grab you “right out the box” with their hard-driving version of the Les McCann/Eddie Harris classic “Compared to What”. The 13 tracks feature Blanchard’s exciting new quintet as they groove to a fusion of Jazz, Funk, and R&B.

Jesse Cook / One World / eOne

Multi-award winning Canadian guitarist is revered for his interpretation of Nuevo-Flamenco Jazz. One World explores cultural traditions with traditional and modern instrumentation, including synthesizers and electronic effects.

Aaron Diehl / Space Time Continuum /  Mack Avenue

This is, 29 year old, Aaron Diehl’s second release on Mack Avenue Records. He continues to display his excellent command of the keyboard with a strong, confident approach to traditional Jazz that really swings. The band includes veteran saxophonist Benny Golson, as they play all Diehl originals.

Vincent Herring / Night and Day / Smoke Sessions

Veteran alto saxophonist, Vincent Herring’s persuasive, expressive style delivers a forceful, mostly hard-bop approach to covers and originals. He and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt have a strong affinity towards each other as they lead the band through the music by Cannonball Adderley, Donald Byrd, Cedar Walton and others.

Joanna Pascale / Wildflower / Stiletto

The rich alto voice of Ms. Pascale is accompanied by such luminaries as Christian McBride, Orrin Evans, Gregoire Maret, Kurt Rosenwinkel and others.

Gary Peacock / Now This / ECM

Known for his work with such iconic pianists as Bill Evans, and Keith Jarrett, legendary bassist Gary Peacock celebrates his 80th birthday with his current trio of Marc Copland, piano, and Joey Baron on drums. The music flows as one voice as these acclaimed artists intuitively anticipate each other’s improvisational creations.

Throttle Elevator Music / Jagged Rocks / Wide Hive

This album from Berkeley’s Wide Hive label is aptly titled.

Throttle presents “jagged” Jazz that really rocks.

Featuring dynamic saxophonist Kamasi Washington with the label’s celebrated house band of Greg Howe, producer, composer, arranger, Matt Montgomery, bass, guitar, piano, composer, and Mike Hughes, drums.

Jeff “Tain” Watts / Blue Vol. I / Dark Key

This masterful drummer keeps topping himself. On his new release, he puts the music in motion with creative treatments of odd meters, and patterns that support a powerful sound from swing to funk. Includes notables such as Osmany Paredes, Gregoire Maret, Mark Whitfield, Christian McBride and others.
